Touchless Trash Can – Why you want an automatic trash can

The touchless trashcan

Since a few years a new gimmick in the world of trashcans are the automatic trash cans . It started with the semi-automatic ones. With those the lid opened automatically but you still had to close it manually. But since a while now, there are the fully automatic touchless trashcans.

So, how exactly does it work and

why would you want one?

Yes, why would one need an automatic hands free trash can? Are we really that lazy? Some might even think of them as “decadent”. But truthfully, there’s something to be said for having a touch free trash can in your kitchen. Especially since recently there’s been much worrying among people for spreading germs. And your garbagecan can really be a great source of bad bacteria and germs. So obviously being able to throw away your rubbish without touching the lid of your waste-bin, will help spreading those nasty germs. Then again, this is also being accomplished with a step-bin or pedal bin.

A touchless trashcan  looks so very cool

But there’s also the aesthetics of it. These kind of luxury trashcans are mostly the stainless steel types. And if you ever had one, you know this is the kind of material that can be very pretty to look at but at the same time smudges very easily. So what better then, than never having to touch the thing? Even with a stepbin you will mess up the bottom part of the bin with your shoes. It’s really pretty cool when all you have to do when having two hands full of trash, is moving them in front of or above the garbage can and see the lid opening by itself. Empty your hands in the trashcan, step away from it. And after 2 or 3 seconds the lid will close.

And that is how it works: With an infrared sensor which reacts on movement. Your garbage can notices your movement in front or above it and it reacts with opening the lid. The infrared sensor then waits a few seconds. When there’s no movement anymore, the lid will close automatically. The few seconds wait is necessary so it won’t suddenly close when you’re emptying a plate of left over food, for instance. Or smack your dustbin out of your hands just when you were emptying it in the bin.

OK I want one, which ones are the best?

So now you know you need a touchless trashcan but which one to buy? Well there are a few brands that make infrared sensor-ed trash cans. Brabantia being on one side of the spectrum and iTouchless being on the other side. Brabantia ‘s touch less trash bin is called the Sensor Bin . Right now it is only available in the big sized 50 litres or 45litres (12 Gal.). iTouchless ‘s automatic trash cans are very popular. They have several kind of touchless garbagecans in their assortment.

Before you buy yourself an electronic trash can, it might be very wise to read some reviews or opinions on some of them. There are some negative stories floating around of touchless trash cans that kept opening and closing their lid continuously for instance. Placing it in a spot where sunlight might hit it, is probably not a good idea. The coming and going of shadows might make the infrared sensor consider it as “movement”. That way your batteries won’t last as long as they would normally do. And “normally” those batteries could last you a few years. This does of course differ from household to household. It goes without sayin that the more you use the bin, the quicker the batteries will run out.

Another pretty good tip: Do not push the lid down manually. Doing so might eventually cause harm to the mechanism. The mechanism that opens and closes the lid might stop working. And I don’t know what’s worse: A trashcan that won’t close anymore or one that won’t open.

Keeping these things in mind will surely help you enjoy your stainless steel touchless trash can a lot longer.

Thank you for stopping by Stainless Steel Garbage Can.
